Human Performance Laboratory
The Human Performance Laboratory, located within Gampel Pavilion, occupies a total space of over 7,800 sq ft. and consists of a number of different laboratory areas dedicated to specific technologies including systems physiology, exercise biochemistry, nutritional research, endocrine function, molecular and cellular signaling, body composition, brachial artery reactivity, ultrasound imaging, and strength/power testing.
What are the HPL’s Research Interests?
The HPL is involved in a wide array of research such as environmental physiology, muscle physiology, reproductive physiology, lipid metabolism, children's fitness, women's health, muscle biochemistry, nutrition, cardiovascular physiology and disease risk factors, weight loss and strength training.
What are the HPL’s Goals?
Our goals are to advance the state of human knowledge by conducting relevant research in the fields of exercise physiology, environmental physiology, muscle physiology, reproductive physiology, lipid metabolism, nutrition, cardiovascular disease risk factors, children's fitness, cardiovascular function, weight loss, and strength training.
We seek to prepare well qualified professionals at the masters and doctoral levels for a variety of positions in the exercise and sport science field. These intensive programs teach competency in several areas, training graduates to:
- apply concepts of physiology, biochemistry, medicine, and biology to the solution of problems germane to human physical activity
- teach and conduct research within the field of exercise and sport science
- bridge the gap between science, practice, and implementing exercise programs
- successfully function in a variety of professional positions in hospitals, medical schools, universities, fitness facilities, corporate research and development, and life science agencies
