Athletic Training
Pre-AT Students
Dear Prospective Athletic Training Student,
The following is a list of issues/concerns/policies that you need to be aware of before you begin the program in the Spring Semester of (year you are accepted into the program).
- You must have access to a car for two of your five semesters while in the athletic training education program. This is necessary to complete your high school clinical rotation and a second off-campus clinical rotation. You must inform the athletic training education program director on the day of your interview in December which of the five semesters you will have access to a car. It is the responsibility of the student to provide their own transportation to their off-campus clinical rotations.
- You must have a standard physical examination completed with your application packet for admission into the program. The necessary paperwork/documentation will be provided to you (also located on the website). The examination is intended to show you can sufficiently and adequately complete your clinical rotations. You only NEED to provide the signature page by your health care provider indicating your health status.
- To get the full benefit of your athletic training clinical rotation you are strongly encouraged to receive the Hepatitis B vaccination. This series must be completed by along with your physical (due November 1st to Dr. Mazerolle). If you do not want to receive the Hepatitis series you must sign a waiver.
- You must have read and signed the technical standards document by November 1st. The completed signature page must be turned into Dr. Mazerolle by November 1st, which includes the signature page by your health care provider.
- If you have other extracurricular activities (i.e. varsity sport, club sport, etc.) you must provide a written plan of when you intend on doing your five clinical rotations at your interview. It is imperative that you understand that time consuming extracurricular activities CAN NOT be undertaken during a semester in which one of the five clinical rotations is completed. If coursework is complete a student would be allowed to do 2 clinical rotations in one semester on only one occasion. All clinical rotations must be done during the fall and spring semesters. Inability to complete five clinical rotations may preclude your admittance into the program. Each case will be handled on a case by case basis. It is likely an additional 2 or 3 semesters may be required to complete the clinical rotations if you continue to participate in your extracurricular activity.
- You must become a student member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association by the first day of classes in the semester you are admitted. A copy of your membership card must be submitted to the program director by the first day of classes.
- You absolutely must attend the new student athletic training orientation on the first day of classes during the spring semester of the year you are admitted at 12:30 pm in the Gentry Building Room 142/144 (Neag School of Education). This will take approximately 3 hours. At that meeting you must have a Weekly Planner (this is mandatory). You are expected to have the planner with you at all times.
- Athletic training students are required to engage in approximately 13-15 hours per week during the first clinical rotation, 20-22 hours per week of clinical experience during the second and third clinical rotations in the first year and 25-27 hours per week during the fourth and fifth clinical rotations in the second year. Those doing clinical rotation with UConn football will have slightly different requirements.
- You must complete the standard OSHA training for working with biohazardous materials (i.e. blood) by the first day of classes in January of year admitted. This is offered on the UConn campus. Proof of attendance must be submitted to the program director by the first day of classes. A specific form will be provided. (As a program we offer a training session during the fall semester each year, if you can’t attend it is your responsibility to complete the training and provide documentation).
- For any student athletic training experiences (i.e. your four clinical rotations), you must have your own personal liability insurance. This generally costs $40-$90 per year, depending on the policy and the company. We will provide a few companies and phone numbers for you. Documentation of this personal liability insurance is necessary before the first day of classes in January of the year you were admitted.
- It is a requirement to participate in one pre-season before the onset of fall semester. Anybody who participates in pre-season during the first clinical rotation must have completed all of the requirements in this letter prior to the start of the preseason experience. You will be asked which of the two pre-seasons will work better for you during your interview.
- You must be Professional Rescuer certified (First Aid, CPR, AED) to perform your clinical rotation. A copy of your first aid and CPR card must be submitted by the first day of classes in January of the year you were admitted.
- A clinical experience contract must be signed by you, the program director, and the supervising athletic trainer BEFORE the start of each clinical rotation.
- Numbers 6,9,10,12, and 13 must be kept current during the entire duration of study in the athletic training education program.
Sincerely,
Stephanie M. Mazerolle, Ph.D., A.T.C.
