Athletic Training
Mission Statement
The mission of the Athletic Training Education program is to prepare students for employment in entry-level athletic training positions located in a variety of clinical settings and/or for the pursuit of advanced degrees in athletic training or health-related professional schools by providing them with the fundamental knowledge, concepts, and skills of a certified athletic trainer as determined by the Athletic Training governing bodies: Board of Certification, Commission on Accrediting Athletic Training Education (CAATE), and the Educational Council.
Educational Goals
- To properly prepare students for success in a variety of athletic training opportunities and/or graduate studies by:
- Provide clinical rotations in high schools, universities, hospitals, and sports medicine clinics which allows for a diverse clinical background
- Consistently providing challenging course work, research, and teaching opportunities
- Exposing the athletic training student to other professionals of the athletic health care team both in the classroom and clinical settings
- Provide an opportunity for students to develop optimal skills in the prevention; recognition, evaluation & immediate care; rehabilitation & reconditioning; health care administration; professional development & responsibility.
- Place students in supervised situations which encourages professional and ethical behavior, common sense, rational thinking and problem solving skills.
Educational Objectives
- Athletic training student will be proficient in clinical examination and diagnosis of athletic injuries.
- Athletic training student will demonstrate proper procedures in risk management and injury prevention.
- Athletic training student will be able to accurately identify and clinically evaluate medical conditions and disabilities associated with the physically active.
- Athletic training student will be able to provide appropriate acute care of athletic related injuries.
- Athletic training student will have the ability to utilize the appropriate therapeutic modality and appropriate rehabilitative and conditioning exercises for the treatment of athletic related injuries.
- An athletic training student will possess the ability to recognize, intervene, and refer when appropriate patients exhibiting socio-cultural, mental, emotional, eating, and psychological behavioral problems/issues.
- Athletic training student will have the ability to write a scholarly paper following the AMA style as reflected by the journal of athletic training.
